Barbados Team ‘Women ‘n Construction’ Sail Into Second
Place
Every
November, here in the Caribbean, local women sailors assume the
responsibility of representing their respective island states and
take on the challenge of competing in the premier regatta for
women in the Caribbean: the Budget Marine Women's Caribbean One
Design Keelboat Championship.
The regatta usually takes place over two days, with 15 races
fought in Simpson’s Bay Lagoon, St. Maarten, NA. Over the past
five years the regatta has attracted teams from as far a field as
Switzerland and Holland, and this year from the US, but the main
focus of the regatta has always been, and will always be,
Caribbean women sailors.
This year, Barbados sent a three woman team
consisting of Renata Goodridge at the helm, Penny McIntyre on the
mainsheet and Sarah Rickwood on the jib. Penny and Sarah, being
veterans of this regatta and having represented Barbados twice
before, knew many of the competing sailors as well as the
organizers.
The Barbados Team donned hard hats and stylish
flowery shirts upon arrival at the skippers briefing, much to the
amusement of the other teams in show of their support and thanks
to their sponsors.
After the first day the Barbados Team - ‘Women
n Construction’ sat in 5th position following a couple of
disappointing races in the afternoon. After the final days racing
the team from Barbados were extremely elated to find themselves in
second place overall.
